THURSDAY 12 OCTOBER 2000 BROADCAST (LIVE) TIME: 8pm ADMISSION: £7.50 TICKETS: Available now from Ticketweb Broadcast are Trish Keenan (vocals), Roj Stevens (keyboards), James Cargill (bass), Tim Felton (guitar), Keith York and Steve Perkins (drums). Their debut album 'The Noise Made By People' was released in March this year. An album with a precisely realised atmosphere that's all too easy to get lost in. The past refracted by the future, and the future imagined by the past, cryptically. More prosaically, Broadcast take aged and neglected ways of writing songs - torch ballads, tense noir jazz, the grand gestures of waltztime and place them in a contemporary context. Theirs are classic songs with truly modernist settings, Trish's creepily ingenuous voice stranded amidst the feints and glitches of electronica, buffeted by wave after wave of crotchety, fuzzy samples and 'proper' instruments. WEDNESDAY 18 OCTOBER 2000 23 SKIDOO (LIVE) TIME: 7.30pm ADMISSION: £10 TICKETS: Available now from Ticketweb 23 Skidoo first surfaced in 1979, as the dust settled around the remains of Punk. Working with the industrial post-punk elite (Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle), they pioneered a fusion of heavily percussion-based grooves, improvised ethnographic instrumentation and industrial funk. The band studied the then little heard gamelan (in Indonesia), crafted their own scrap metal percussion instruments and became renowned for incendiary, experimental live shows. Though they disappeared underground in the mid 80s, the members of 23 Skidoo have never really been away, forming the highly respected Ronin label in 1989 (releasing cuts by the likes of Deckwrecka and Roots Manuva), and building a storming reputation as R&B and hiphop producers and remixers.
